The once-divorced sportswriter noted his life changed after he met Sharri, a 9/11 widow, whose life was complicated and was raising her young son Devon as a single mother.

Adam has also talked about his wife's ex-husband, Joe Maio, who worked for Cantor Fitzgerald. Unfortunately, Joe was one of the company's 658 employees who died in the World Trade Center. After ESPN ran a feature on Joe on the 2016 football season, the sportswriter got hundreds of emails and texts that addressed tribute to Joe. He then covered the circumstances of his life on the memoir which mostly drove by the man he didn't know (his wife's ex-husband).

In June 2016, Adam and Sharri celebrated their wedding anniversary with their two children. Besides his stepson Devon, the 2014 Media Person of the Year has a daughter named Dylan Schefter with his wife. The couple's daughter Dylan enjoyed her four-weeks sleepaway camp in June 2018.

The couple's daughter, Dylan often accompanies her father at GMA and has also interviewed NFL head coach and quarterbacks at her young age. The Shefter's family sent off their son Devon to his freshman dorm in Michigan for higher studies in September 2018 after he completed his graduation in June 2018.
