She worked before as the chief correspondent at the ABC News Boston which was affiliate WCVB-TV. Soon after her successful career as the News reporter, in 1993 to 1998 Martha worked for National Public Radio, where she worked covering the Pentagon.

After the separation, she moved onto another relationship and married Julius Genachowski, the Chairman of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission in 1991. Despite the age differences of eight years, she got married to Julius. After six years of her married experience with Julius, she dissolved her relationship with him and got a divorce in 1997. 

Currently, she is in a married relationship with Tom Gjelten, a journalist. Martha has two children from her former husbands and boyfriends, a son named Jake Genachowski, and a daughter named Greta Bradlee and she have stayed with her current spouse living together in the family.
