In an interview with Brash in 2012, actor Ian McKellan confirmed that the two actors, Richard and Lee, who played the dwarves role in the Hobbit trilogy, were openly gay in real life as well. Since then, the two were surrounded with gay rumors.

Richard further created a buzz on the internet after the pair was supposedly spotted driving a golf cart with four children. Prior to that, in an interview with Mirror in May 2010 Richard did hint that he is straight. He said that he would love to have a wife and start a family. He further added that he likes a free-flowing girl with the sense of humor and someone who loves food. Nevertheless, Lee, who was speculated to be gay, confirmed about his sexuality in an interview with The NewYork Times in June 2018.
