Stan was the chairman of the creative writing department at San Francisco State University. He was also the author of seven poetry books and recipient of Edgar Allan Poe Award of the Academy of American Poets.

She met her then-husband during her high school days. During those days, Stan was atheist, and she was following Catholic Church. She lost her mother when she was 14 and had to drop out of college because of financial issue. She then found Stan as support during her struggling days.

She welcomed a daughter Michelle Rice in 1966 but Michelle, unfortunately, took her last breath in 1972 because of Leukemia at the tender age of five. She then gave birth to son Christopher Rice, who was born in 1978. He is now a famous novelist, who uses his words as the sword.

She and her deceased spouse used to reside in New Orleans. She moved to southern California with her family after Hurricane Katrina demolished her home in New Orleans in 2005.
