At a very early age, she discovered her skills in singing and was able to captivate people with her mesmerizing voice. At the age of seven, Knight won Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour TV show contest which helped her to achieve minor success. But unfortunately, in 1973, she divorced her husband, James. James was a musician, who reportedly became an addict to drugs and left his family. He died after a few years of his divorce with Gladys.
Gladys's son, Jimmy, from her relationship with late hubby James, managed her career under his own company Newman Management Inc but unfortunately, he had a tragic death in 1997 because of heart failure. He was found dead during his sleep at his home in Las Vegas.
