Grace was born near Kansas City, Kansas, to Tina and David VanderWaal. Her father, David is of Dutch descent who works as a vice president of marketing at LG Electronics. Later, Grace shifted to Suffern, New York along with her parents and two older siblings, a sister Olivia and a brother named Jakob. 

Previously, her parents' didn't take her singing passion too seriously, thinking she would never play it. Her love was playing the ukelele, and she decided to buy the instrument from her Christmas money. In an interview with reporter Maddy Arnold for AGT on 24 August 2016, Grace's parents admitted that she started learning ukulele by watching YouTube videos.
