His grandparents immigrated from Belarus to Poland to the United States in 1922. Growing up in Long Island, New York, the United States, he pursued his education from John F. Kennedy High School and Hopper College.

Later, he received a Bachelor's degree from Yale University in 1974 and a Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1977.
