Chad graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School. Chad began his football career by playing college football for Santa Monica College, where he played alongside NFL player Steve Smith. In 2000, Chad led the team to a Fiesta Ball victory after he got transferred to Oregon State Beavers football team.
From 2001 to 2010, Chad played for the Bengals and was one of the leading players, but his work often got overshadowed because of his habit of bragging and his continual disregard for authority generated problems for everyone.
Later in 2011, Chad signed a three-year contract of $6.35 million with New England Patriots. The Miami Dolphins approved him in 2012, but due to his arrest, he was released by the Dolphins too. In the same year during November, he also was all over the newspaper headline because he didn't make the payment of $5250 for his child support. It was a hard period for the athlete because his expenses on various things like child support, mortgages, and foods were too high compared to his income of just $3000 a month.
Eventually, he also played in the Canadian Football league called Montreal Alouettes. He spent an entire season under suspension due to him missing the necessary training camp, and in 2016 he became a free agent. Chad also showed an interest in coaching when he worked as a guest instructor for the Browns during the 2016 training camp.

Chad proposed her on 16 November 2010 after dating for few months in the same year. A month after the wedding Chad got arrested for headbutting his wife Lozada following an argument. He was soon released the following afternoon on $2,500 bond.

Because of this incident, he also lost his job with the Miami Dolphins. Not just his career even his relationship with his wife Lozada was poorly affected, and the couple decided to get divorced which got filed on 14 August 2012, and they officially got separated on 19 September 2012. It was not the last time he stayed behind bars. In 2013, a warrant was issued multiple times against him for disobeying the terms of his probation.
Talking about his kids, in an interview on 11 February 2016 Chad discussed having six kids with his different girlfriends that he dated in the past. On the interview, he talked about how he regrets now as he was unable to give his children time. Chad added that it's too late already because they have grown up and busy in their world with their friends. Chad also says that being a dad is very "dope" and feels lucky that he is not working anymore and can give his kids time now whether be it attending their school functions or by dropping them to school.
At present Chad has seven kids though, Kennedi being the youngest one born after 2016. Out of all, his son Chad Johnson Jr. wants to be flashy like his father.
