For further education, Mariana enrolled in a Master degree program at Columbia University- Graduate School of Journalism in 2008. She graduated with a master's degree in broadcast journalism from the university in 2009.
She was raised in Caracas. The journalist holds an American nationality and belongs to Latino ethnicity. She also has two siblings in the family, a sister Graciela Atencio and a brother. Her father passed away on 20 February 2018 after a long battle with pneumonia and undergoing lung surgeries.
