Scott continued his studies further by choosing journalism as a primary subject at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. He dropped out of the college and pursued a full-time job.
He began his professional career in 1975 by working as a broadcast journalist at KSEL-TV. Within the next seven years, he switched to KXAS-TV in 1978 and then to WFAA-TV in 1982. Working for seven years in WFAA-TV, he began reporting on Guatemalan refugees in rural jungle areas of Mexico. Pelley joined CBS News in 1989 as a New York-based reporter. Covering all major news and conducting many interviews of top personalities including George W. Later in 2003, he started reporting for 60 Minutes and got shifted to the Sunday edition of the broadcast in 2004.
