Al Sharpton grew up with his parents Alfred Charles Sharpton Sr. (born in 1926) and Ada Essie (Richards) Sharpton (born in 1925). His family moved to Brooklyn when he was just five years old.
Al's father Alfred owned a small grocery store. His father left the house when the activist was only nine years of age. His mother solely raised him and even worked as a domestic worker to support the family.
His family is of Native American descent following its roots back to Cherokee ancestry. The ancestors of him were owned by the relatives of late Senator of South Carolina Strom Thurmond. Al's parents had come to the north during the migration of rural southern blacks in the last century.
He was the second child to his parents. In March 2018, his half-brother, Kenneth Glasgow was arrested and accused of murder after participating in March for Our Lives rally in Alabama. Kenneth was charged with driving a car when his passenger opened fire on a woman and killed her.
